Commonly Requested Features
This is a list of features that are commonly requested in our
wishlist
newsgroup.
If a feature is not in Mozilla, it is because no-one is working on it!
Why not get involved
and help get it in Mozilla?
Application
-
UI "Skins"
Mozilla uses XUL and Javascript to define its user interface. This
makes it a lot easier to design and modify user interfaces. For example,
you can add buttons to the user interfaces that do your own tasks.
Different styles can be applied to the user interface using CSS files.
-
Cryptography in Mozilla
Netscape can't release cryptographic source code to mozilla.org due to
United States cryptographic controls. Neither can they implement
cryptography APIs in Mozilla. However, Mozilla has a general
plugin architecture, with which it will be possible to implement cryptography.
See the crypto FAQ for more details.
-
Prevent Animations
Mozilla currently has no support for this, but there is a bug
report for it, as well as requests to be able to disable preferences
like this on a URL-by-URL
basis, and through a button
in the UI that has a temporary effect (to turn animations on/off).
-
Standards Compliance
The aim for the first release is full support for the W3C standards of
HTML 4, XML 1, CSS 1 and DOM 1. There is some support for CSS 2,
DOM 2, and XHTML, XSL, XLink and MathML, but whether any of these
will make it into the first release of Mozilla is unknown.
-
PNG Alpha Support
Mozilla currently does not support PNG alpha on all platforms, although
hopefully it will before initial stable release. See the
bug
report for more information.
Browser
-
Automatic Form Filling, Password Saving
Mozilla has a feature called "Wallet" that does this.
-
Embeddable Browser
There are currently embedded versions of the Mozilla layout engine as an
IE compatible ActiveX
control, a GTK
widget, and a Java
widget. Questions should go to the embedding
newsgroup.
-
Cookie Acceptance/Javascript Toggle Depending On Site
Mozilla currently supports cookie acceptance on a site-by-site basis, and
may do so for Javscript in the near future.
Enhancement requests are filed for the Javascript
issue and for applying this to a range
of preferences.
-
"Go" Button
There is considerable debate over the utility of a go button, and the debate
continues. However, anyone will be able to design their own user
interface for Mozilla, using XUL. And there is also an enhancement
request to allow end users to customise which toolbar
buttons they want.
-
Turn Off <Blink>
There is currently no direct support for this in Mozilla, however, it is
possible to do this with a user CSS stylesheet.
-
Preventing Popup Windows
There is currently no support for this in Mozilla, but there is a bug
report.
-
Advertisement Blockers
There are various ways you can do this already, and it will probably possible
to write a Mozilla plugin to do this. However, this proposal is very
badly thought out as it will reduce the revenues that web sites get from
advertising, which keep the majority of the web free of charge. Hence
it is unlikely this will every appear in Mozilla or Communicator.
This may eventually appear indirectly however, since things such as
preventing popup windows and having preferences differ on a site-by-site
basis can achieve this (these are above).
-
Page Errors Log
There is currently no feature in Mozilla that allows the user to receive
feedback and problems with web pages, such as bad HTML/CSS/DOM. There
is a bug report
discussing this issue.
-
ActiveX Support
Mozilla currently has no ActiveX support, but it is possible to use a plugin
as with Communicator 4.
Mail-News
-
Multiple Mail Accounts
This is probably the most requested feature, and Mozilla supports this.
-
Filtering Existing Mail/Outgoing Mail
Mozilla currently does not have this, but there are bug reports filed on
outgoing
mail,
existing
mail and a more
general proposal.
-
Easy Way To Filter A Message Sender/Subject
Mozilla currently does not have "filter by example", but there is a bug
report.
