International Info & Testing Hints for Milestone Builds

Maintained by: Katsuhiko Momoi

What is "Milestone" and how you should approach testing Mozilla:

Many of you are familiar with Netscape beta releases. A beta release is made when the development stage is fairly close to the formal release and the devoper would like to obtain feedback from the public.

Mozilla has not reached the beta stage yet. To keep track of the development progress for the Netscape-branded Communicator client, Netscape has establsihed a number of "milestones" which are released every so many weeks. For each milestone, each module group has committed to enable a set of features important and practical for that Milestone. Thus, at any given time, the development process has the "current completed" milestone and the next milestone in progress.

What does this mean to those who want to help test internaitonal features? I would recommend that each tester keep the following in mind when she/he downloads a build or compile a build from  the source:

  • Read current installation instructions carefully to avoid frustration. It is usually detailed in Milestone builds release information.
  • Learn what international features have been enabled and if they are the features which interest you, or are in your area of testing expertise. If so, update your source or download the daily build and start testing. To get information on what features have been enabled toward the next milestone, follow the link under the Next Milestone section below.
  • How should we use the Current/Last Completed Milestone Build ?  The most current completed Milstone build offers a reference point to compare the progress since the Milstone build was released.  This will give you an idea of what features should be working right now. Sometimes, you may find a regression in the cureent build when compared to the current/last completed Milestone build. Milestone builds are also stable builds. They can be used more reliably than daily builds in which developers are more concerned about enabling new features or experinmental ideas.

Current/Last Completed Milestone build: M11 (based on the source around 11/11/99)
